Banh Bot Loc (Mini Tapioca Dumplings)
Like other Vietnamese dishes, banh bot loc in Vietnam also has many variations. You might be familiar with Hue’s banh bot loc, which is usually wrapped and steamed in a piece of banana leaf, but the one in Mui Ne has a slightly different take. There is still the signature chewy tapioca shell and it is served with lots of scallion oil, crunchy shallots, and fish sauce, but the fillings usually don’t have pork like Hue’s version. Therefore, banh bot loc in Mui Ne is pretty small and they are usually sold in plastic Tupperware. You can find it at local Mui Ne markets or if you’re lucky, you might see some local lady vendor sell it on the street. Make sure to ask for the price before buying to avoid being scammed. The standard price for one serving is around VND 25,000 – 35,000/box ($1)
Cha Cuon Ca Trich ( Herring Fish Summer Roll)
This special summer roll is both a local and tourist favorite. Similar to the standard spring roll in which you would find lots of fresh herbs and veggies wrapped in a piece of rice paper, but instead of boiled pork and shrimp, the protein in Mui Ne’s summer roll is herring, some cold cuts, fermented pork, and boiled eggs. Herring is carefully prepared to remove the fishy taste, then wrapped in rice paper and deep-fried like a mini spring roll, which adds a delicious crunch to the summer roll. You can ask for wrapped summer rolls or buy the ingredients home to wrap them yourself and eat them as you go. This delicious summer roll is a harmony of fresh greens and a taste of the ocean.
