Border Checkpoints at Vietnam Crossings
Opening hours: most checkpoints will be opened around 8 AM – 5 PM
Visa, passport, and other documents:
- Chinese, Laotian, or Cambodian travelers can easily get into Vietnam with a crossing pass instead of a Vietnam visa
- For international travelers from other countries, you will need to get your passport and Vietnam visa well ready before crossing the borders because Vietnam does not have a visa on arrival system for its land borders
You must obtain a visa approval letter to get a visa stamp for entering the country

Exchange currency before crossing the borders, in small change if possible, because:
- Many crossings are in rural, mountainous areas, so there might be no ATM/bank at the border checkpoints
- You should expect a lot of both official and “unofficial” fee such as stamping fee, immigration fee, and overtime charge (when you come after opening hours or on weekends)

What you cannot bring to Vietnam:
- Weapon
- Drugs
- Anti-government propaganda
- Gold, cigarettes, and liquor above a certain amount

Gather your patience as the queue at the office can be quite long
