Ho Chi Minh’s New Airport Development Project

As can be seen, Tan Son Nhat Airport is usually in an overloaded status and this results in the low service quality of this international airport.

In the short term, the Prime Minister has approved the project of Ho Chi Minh’s new airport development, in particular, Tan Son Nhat Airport expansion, as proposed by ADPi Consulting unit. Accordingly, an additional passenger terminal will be built in the South of Tan Son Nhat Airport (as the same side of the existing terminals); and several auxiliary structures will be conducted in the North of the Airport.

The existing T1 and T2 terminal will be renovated and expanded in the capacity to about 30 million passengers/year. The additional T3 terminal is also planned to be built with a capacity of 20 million passengers/year. In general, the capacity of the whole airport will increase to 50 million passengers/year. This project of Ho Chi Minh’s new airport development was approved in September 2018 and is planned to conduct in the period of 2020 – 2030.

Tan Son Nhat Airport after expansion

In the long term, to solve this serious problem, a brand new international airport, Long Thanh, will be constructed to share the burden with Tan Son Nhat Airport. After Long Thanh is completed, it is estimated that about 85% of international flights, 12% of domestic flights will come to Long Thanh, the pressure for Tan Son Nhat Airport will greatly reduce.

Long Thanh Airport is planned with a capacity of 100 million passengers, 40 kilometers far from Ho Chi Minh City, 30 kilometers far from Bien Hoa, 70 kilometers far from Vung Tau, and located in the center of the Southeastern Economic Region. Long Thanh Airport project is planned to be approved in 2019 and will complete in 2050.
